字首 in- 源自於拉丁文 in，表示 in、on、into 等意思。在古法文中多拼成 en-，不過有幾個字兩種拼法皆可，如：enquire/inquire（詢問；打聽）。此外，in-/im- 也是 en-/em- 的變形，表示「使；造成」，如：insure/ensure（確保）、imprison（監禁）。

irrigate v. 灌溉；沖洗
The farmer irrigates his land with water from that stream.
農夫從河裡取水灌溉他的農地。
