字首e-、ec- 和ex- 同源，e- 和 ex- 同源自拉丁文介系詞，ec- 則來自希臘文中和 ex- 同源的 ek。ef- 和 es- 則是音同化的關係，其後接字母f 時，ex- 會同化為 ef-，接 c 時則有些會同化為 es-。
