字首 syn- 之後接 b、m、p 時，syn- 會變形為 sym-；之後接「子音 s + 字音」或子音 z 時，syn- 變形為 sy-，如：system 和 syzygy（朔望；拉丁文古詩的二韻腳）；之後接l時變形為 syl-，如：syllabus（摘要；進度表）。不過，sy-、syl- 的情況較為少見，主要以 sym- 和 syn- 為主。
