字首 pro- 主要有兩個意思，一是指「時間或空間上較前的」，另一是指「支持；為…… 」的意思，如：pro-life 就是指「反對墮胎的」。此外，pro 可單獨使用，為 professional（專業的；專家）的縮寫。
